Synopsis:
Clamp is a well-known, highly revered manga publishing company and former magazine. This classic is about "Kimihiro Watanuki is haunted by visions of ghosts and spirits. He seeks help from a mysterious woman named Yuko, who claims she can help. However, Watanuki must work for Yuko in order to pay for her aid. Soon Watanuki finds himself employed in Yuko's shop where he sees things and meets customers that are stranger than anything he could have ever imagined".
REVIEW:
Transparency: This is a series I was really interested in for a long time, but could never find solo volumes for an affordable price. After finally finding the omnibus, I felt like it was one I needed to review. For the purpose of this review, it will cover the entire omnibus which covers volumes 1-3.
Omnibus can be overwhelming for some readers, which was the case for me. I did find myself having to set the book down frequently because I would need a break in comparison to traditional graphic novel/manga volume sizes or pacing. There is so much going on in this series that create a need to stop, research, and then continue reading.
Clamp does such an excellent job at cross-relating stories to each other. As this was my first Clamp series, I did find there were things I knew nothing about, which caused some spoilers to occur. Once I concluded that I would just have to be comfortable without knowing all the information, I really began to enjoy the series.
It was whimsical, fun, and had the right amount of drama without being too unrealistic. It does read like a supernatural mystery of the week, with the main characters set out to discover various ghouls, ghosts, and supernatural entities. It balances comedy with suspense well but does reflect the time period (2006) it was written, which may be hard for younger readers to engage in.
OUR RATING:
INTERESTING FACT:
Clamp is a powerhouse in manga publications and is an all-female group consisting of Nanase Ohkawa, and three artists Mekona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuma Igarashi. See the linked information for more information on each of these wonderful women:
