The Water Dragon's Bride by Rei Toma

SYNOPSIS:

Asahi, a modern-day girl, is whisked away to a strange land. She then befriends a boy named Subaru, who helps Asahi grow accustomed to this other land. But despite Subaru's efforts, Asahi gets in trouble when she's offered as a sacrifice to a water dragon god!

REVIEW:

The Water Dragon's Bride is a simplistic story of will-they-won't-they with a twist. This semi-isekai story transports not only the main character but the reader into uncertainty and worry. The Water Dragon is centuries old and due to his time in solitude has little to no understanding of the workings of the human world which makes him cold and shut off. Ashai is warm, confident, and caring; despite her young age, she is aware of the world around her even though it is not like her own. This dynamic is not necessarily new, but Toma still pulls at your heartstrings to keep reading as each turn and twist is furthering the plot in an interesting way. At the end of the volume, we are left with a lot of questions about how the story will move forward.

Toma does an excellent job, as always, with formulating that first volume to give you just enough information about the world, characters, and plot without spoiling you as a reader. While the characters are not necessarily unique, the story still pulls you in, and you want to see Asahi happy once more. It has some Inyuyasha vibes to it as well.
