"Things I Hate
Ghosts
Laundry
Tessi Waffleton”
OVERVIEW:
Marjorie Glatt is a little young to be running the family laundromat, but with her dad left catatonic by her mother’s death, she has no choice but to soldier on while being heckled and harassed by her customers and classmates, and especially Mr. Saubertuck, who has his eye on the Glatt’s prime location for his dream five-star yoga studio and spa. One auspicious night, a young misfit ghost wanders into Marjorie’s laundromat and makes himself at home. Ghosts are already high on Marjorie’s list of things she hates, and the be-sheeted Wendell isn’t helping matters with his midnight blanket fort building either.
REVIEW: In this “worlds collide” story, I found myself intrigued by Wendell’s Ghost Code and by Marjorie’s world, reading this graphic novel in one sitting. It addresses loss, having to grow up too fast, and the pain of being left out. Following Marjorie’s story brought up many questions that would help a parent or young person discuss some of these very real and very big feelings that arise as a part of the human experience. I would venture to say that even as an adult, the whimsy of Thummler’s tale forced me to notice some of the “ghosts” in my world.
