OVERVIEW:

March is a graphic novel trilogy and autobiography depicting the journey John Lewis, one of our most distinguished and transformative Civil Rights leaders. In Book One of the March trilogy, Congressman John Lewis (GA-5) is presented with an opportunity to retell the story of his childhood. The novel weaves in critical moments in the life of John Lewis and his family as they attempt to navigate racism and discrimination while living in the American South. Book One describes brutal experiences during the 1965 Selma-Montgomery March as activists and Civil Rights leaders marched across the Edmund Pettis Bridge. Readers relive pivotal moments in American history, giving insight into both gut-wrenching experiences of black Americans as they navigate segregation and inhumane treatment by those who opposed the Civil Rights agenda. March also includes moments of American exceptionalism, like the events leading up to the election of our 44th President, Barack Obama.

Interesting Fact:

Congressman John Lewis was inspired to write the March trilogy after reading the 1950’s comic book, Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story.

The March trilogy was illustrated by National Book Award Winner, cartoonist Nate Powell, who is the first and only cartoonist to receive the award in this specific genre.
